Jain Food in Singapore — No Onion, No Garlic, Home-Cooked by Alif Rasoi

Finding genuinely good Jain food in Singapore can be harder than it should be. Plenty of places offer vegetarian dishes, but a true Jain meal asks for more — no onion, no garlic, and real care taken in the kitchen so that nothing slips in by habit. That care is something we take seriously at Alif Rasoi.

We cook Jain-friendly versions of many of our dishes on request, the same way they would be made in a Jain household. If you or your family follow a Jain diet, here is how we make sure you can eat with confidence.

What Makes Food “Jain”?

At its heart, Jain cooking leaves out onion and garlic entirely. For stricter diets, it also avoids root vegetables such as potato, ginger and carrot. Because every Jain household draws that line a little differently, we do not assume — we ask.

When you order, simply tell us:

  • No onion and no garlic (our standard Jain preparation), or

  • Stricter Jain — also no root vegetables

From there, we plan your dishes around what you can eat, rather than handing you a tiny fixed list.

How We Cook Jain Food at Alif Rasoi

Jain cooking is not about leaving things out and hoping the dish still works. It is about building flavour a different way — with the right spices, fresh tomatoes, herbs, yogurt and good technique standing in for the depth that onion and garlic usually provide.

Everything is cooked fresh in our Queenstown home kitchen, in small batches, so a Jain order is genuinely prepared Jain — not a regular dish with the garnish removed. We keep preparation separate and careful, so there is no cross-contact with onion or garlic.

Dishes We Commonly Prepare Jain

Many of our vegetarian dishes adapt beautifully to a Jain kitchen. Favourites include:

  • Dhokla — the light, steamed Gujarati classic, naturally suited to a Jain table

  • Sabudana dishes — sabudana vada and khichdi, a fasting-day staple in many homes

  • Paneer dishes — palak paneer and mattar paneer, made without onion or garlic

  • Kadhi — comforting yogurt-and-gram-flour kadhi

  • Rice and pulao — fragrant rice prepared the Jain way

  • Dals and sabzis — everyday lentils and vegetables, seasoned without onion or garlic

This is a starting point, not a limit. Tell us what you would like, and we will tell you honestly whether we can make it Jain.

Jain Catering for Events and Gatherings

Jain guests are often the hardest to cater for at a mixed event — and the easiest to leave with very little to eat. We make sure that does not happen.

For satsang, paryushan, family functions and community gatherings, we can put together a fully Jain spread, or a Jain section that is cooked and packed separately from the rest of the menu. You will find more about how we cater on our catering page, and you can always tell us your Jain headcount when you plan an event.
